August T. Boberg

August T. Boberg was born and raised in Fjugesta, Sweden and then immigrated to the United States in 1913. He worked as a carpenter in New England for a short time. For a couple years, he worked as a lumberjack in Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1920, he moved to South Dakota where he then entered the resort business. He moved to Nisswa, MN in 1924 where he became a “Pioneer Gull Lake Resorter” and built the Gull Lake Hotel and Outing Club. He established the first campground in the Brainerd Lakes Area on the south shore of Bishop Greek. In 1930 he moved to the present site of Boberg’s Resort on Gull Lake which is still in the family. He spent many years guiding fishing parties on Gull Lake. He wintered in Florida, working as he always said “to support the resort in Minnesota”. August traveled extensively over the U.S. and many countries abroad. He made a total of 13 trips back to his homeland of Sweden, most by ship. One of his trips was by plane in 1946, the first commercial air flight overseas.
