Steven C. Amy
Steven C. Amy graduated from Pine River High School in 1969. He had received a scholarship from Brainerd Community College and planned to attend there in the fall. On the day he was to register, he chose to enlist in the Marines instead, telling the college Dean, “I’ll be back.” While in the Marines he also took college studies, with credits being applied when he returned after his 2 year sting. Steve was active in basketball, music and stage plays, singing in the Reality music group and serving as their MC. He had a great sense of humor and excellent singing voice. The Reality music group later honored him by singing at his funeral.
His desire and plan was to become an attorney. On the fateful fall day he had driven to Bemidji State College with his fiancé to register for his junior year. They were returning home, planning to attend Pine River’s homecoming football game, when his car was hit by a pickup. He died two days later on September 24, 1973.
At the time of his death, his parents, Clark and Amanda Amy, established the Steven C. Amy Memorial Scholarship at Brainerd Community College, now Central Lakes College. The scholarship was to be given annually to a student from Pine River, MN. Over forty years later, this scholarship has continued to grow, providing scholarships for many of the children and now some grandchildren of Steven’s classmates and friends. Steven’s sister, Allison, manages this scholarship now that his parents are gone.
