The Carder Family Scholarship Fund

The Carder Family Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is in honor of Ethelyn (Lynn) Carder. It is intended for a non-traditional female pursuing a nursing education.

After graduating from Hackensack (MN) High School, Ethelyn (Lynn) continued her education at Business School in Minneapolis and in healthcare. Lynn started working as a nurse in a Bemidji, MN doctor’s office in the late 1940’s when a nursing education was not required to assist doctors with their patients. In 1949, she married Richard (Dick) Carder in Hackensack, MN. Lynn and Dick raised their 4 children where Lynn was a fulltime mother and Dick was farming by day and teaching young farmers the latest methods in the farming
industry in the evenings.

In 1960, Lynn and Dick moved to Brainerd, MN and lived south of Brainerd. Lynn worked at the Brainerd State Hospital and Dick was the manager of a large hereford beef farm. In 1965, the family moved to a farm east of Brainerd, Lynn worked in Brainerd at Lake Region Clinic and Dick at Triangle Oil while tending to large gardens and raising, canning and freezing many vegetables. There were many raspberries to pick and sell, Gladioli flowers to share and a few cattle to feed. At age 50 (1975), Lynn returned to the classroom at Brainerd Junior College for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license. When completed, Lynn continued at Lake Region Clinic as a LPN for a total of 19 years.

From the beginning, education was important to both Lynn and Dick. Their children understood they were expected to go further their education. Coleen, Roxanne, Steven & Brian all graduated from the Brainerd Public Schools and continued their education at Brainerd Junior College (Central Lakes College). After Brainerd Junior College, their children continued their schooling at Mankato State College, Moorhead State College, Brainerd Technical College, and St. Olaf College.

Lynn was a faithful and loving wife and wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed being active at church as a choir member, member of the Deacons and enjoyed the company and service projects of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. Her family and friends will remember her hospitality and her love for baking bread and endless supplies of cookies and sweets.

After retirement in 1985, Lynn and Dick spent winters participating with projects as “Volunteers in Mission” in Sitka, Alaska; Menaul School in Albuquerque, NM.; Campbell Farm in Yakima, WA.; Wycliffe in Dallas, TX; Pearson Elementary School in Mission, TX; Senior Center volunteer in Mission, TX. They enjoyed 20 years as “winter Texans” and warmly enjoyed their Texas community friends.

During the last year and a half of Lynn’s life, she was cared for by three agencies who made a huge difference in the quality of her life. It was the many caring and skilled CNA’s, Universal workers, LPN’s and RN’s who helped her on a daily basis. They are Diamond Willow Assisted Living, Baxter, MN; Woodland Good Samaritan Village, Brainerd, MN and St. Croix Hospice, Sartell, MN.

Ethelyn was born September 4, 1925, in Birchlake Township, Hackensack, MN, the daughter of Arthur A. and Iola (Kearns) Falk. Her older brother was John Arthur Falk and her younger brother was Carl James Falk.

Lynn passed away on March 5, 2015 at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, MN. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Coleen (Ann Turnbull), of Brainerd. Roxanne (Robert) Lueck, of Clarksville, TN, and children Kim and Don Hall with child Zach Clarksville, TN; Kate & Steve Carter with child Garrison Denver, CO; Kristin Denver, CO. Impact

Please accept my gratitude for making The Carder Family Scholarship Fund possible. I am so honored to be a recipient. As an older student and a single mother of five, I was worried that I would fall short. This scholarship allows me to make ends meet and be successful in my studies. I am so humbled and thankful to you for helping me reach my goals. Thank you, again for your support.
